Often, when people retire, they look forward to a life of leisure. Playing golf and tennis, getting in the best shape of their lives, leisurely trolling through the waterways, and fishing or shrimping when the notion strikes are a few favorites, but the reality is that most have a need for more.

Some will volunteer and others will find a fun, part-time job for social engagement. However, many will search for an intellectual stimulus in addition to the many physical activities available.

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute offers a variety of courses to more than 1,400 students. The subjects vary widely from art to government, science to health, history to music and much, much more. The tours and trips they provide are also extremely popular with the locals.

What makes this special? It is the 250 dedicated instructors with many facets of experience and knowledge that they are willing to share with the students. Dr. Tom Anderson is one of the leaders who loves to stir a passion for learning and encouraging a debate on a controversial issue. With a long Naval career in medicine, he has led topics about the maritime world, the Jasper ocean terminal, and various ecosystems to enthusiastic attendees.

There are three campuses located at Hilton Head, Bluffton and Beaufort, making the classes very accessible to Lowcountry residents. When the new catalogue of courses is released, it is a certainty they are reviewed with anticipation and excitement as participants look for new programs with fascinating educators.

Having things to do in this area is never a problem. Having time to do all the things you want to do takes some careful planning.
