Spring Island

Okatie Real Estate

Darle's Insight: Spring Island is so, so much more than it appears at first glance. The developers here conscientiously preserved much of the incredible natural beauty of this old plantation and provided for only 400 homes on 3,000 acres. Most of the homes have very private settings but the people are extremely active and friendly. This neighborhood can appeal to a wide range of people. Outstanding golf, equestrian center, boating, and more.

Historic Spring Island is located near Beaufort and Hilton Head, SC is one of the last private islands on the Atlantic Coast. The habitation of Spring Island dates back to the American aborigine circa 2000 B.C. They harvested shell fish and some remnants of their camp still remain. A trading village was established in 1706 by John Cochran, a Scotsman, who received an English grant to Spring Island. Before the Civil War, the Edward's operated a grand cotton plantation with formal gardens and majestic oaks overlooking pristine salt marshes. The Northern Hunt Club enthusiasts preserved it from about 1900 for nearly a century. The development was begun in 1990 and has been very successful. Today it has become a quiet retreat for the property owners.

The 3,000 acres will have only 410 homes at completion with over 1,200 acres protected as nature preserves. The Spring Island Trust was created to protect and preserve the rich environmental and cultural history. Scientists, historians, and artists have always been welcomed for their interests and contributions they can make to the research of this historical site.

Very little environmental change has occurred on Spring Island in the last 300 years. Hundreds of bird species, deer, wild turkeys, fox and black masked squirrels are abundant here. The rivers, marshes and creeks are filled with shrimp, crabs, oysters and fish contributing to one of the largest and richest natural food habitats anywhere.

The Arnold Palmer designed golf course is spectacular with its tabby ruins and breathtaking views. However, there is much to do unrelated to golf. Members can enjoy horseback riding, tennis, boating, fishing, swimming, photography, kayaking, bicycling, hunting and much more. Spring Island crab boils and oyster roasts are legendary!

The River House is reminiscent of an old hunting lodge with big fireplaces and comfortable furnishings. Many meals served here feature the food from the island. The residents and guests can enjoy social events or quiet evenings here in a style that is representative of the understated elegance of Spring Island and the era of the traditional south.

Low country architecture found in historic Beaufort and nearby plantations have set the standard for the interpretation of design. A wide range of ownership makes this beautiful island a destination for people with many diverse interests and goals. It is an ideal corporate or executive retreat or a wonderful atmosphere for the family who wants to share in a serene natural environment a world apart from the fast paced life beyond.
