During the American Revolution, islanders sided with the colonists, resulting in their land and possessions being frequently raided by the British stationed on nearby Daufuskie Island. After the war, residents quickly recovered and developed bountiful crops of indigo, rice, and cotton. Residents prospered until the War of 1812 when the British invaded the island and burned down most of the coastal homes. Hilton Head also played a significant role during the Civil War, as over 50,000 Union troops were stationed here during the blockade of Savannah. Black males were recruited from the island and surrounding area, and become the first black troops for the Union forces. After the war, many of the soldiers purchased land on the island.
