Hilton Head History
Hilton Head Island and the Lowcountry started with humble beginnings to become one of the premier residential and vacation destinations in the Southeastern United States and the world. While sailing in Port Royal Sound in search of land to establish working plantations, English sea captain William Hilton sighted what is now known as Hilton Head Island. In 1717, Colonel John Barnwell was granted one thousand acres on the northwest corner of the island, and became the first established white settler.
During the American Revolution, islanders sided with the colonists, resulting in their land and possessions being frequently raided by the British stationed on nearby Daufuskie Island. After the war, residents quickly recovered and developed bountiful crops of indigo, rice, and cotton. Residents prospered until the War of 1812 when the British invaded the island and burned down most of the coastal homes.
Hilton Head also played a significant role during the Civil War, as over 50,000 Union troops were stationed here during the blockade of Savannah. Black males were recruited from the island and surrounding area, and become the first black troops for the Union forces. After the war, many of the soldiers purchased land on the island.
Hilton Head Island Today: A World Class Resort
For many years Hilton Head was the quiet residence of farmers and fishermen. During the 1950's Charles Fraser and a group of investors purchased over 19,000 acres of land and began the modern age the island. Land was sold to developers and the master plan of the area included preserving the natural environment and surroundings. The emphasis on preservation has allowed the area to maintain its natural beauty throughout the years, allowing for growth without becoming a commercialized landscape setting.
Hilton Head Island developed rapidly during the 1970's from some 2,500 residents to the nearly 37,000 in 2002. Today, Hilton Head Island is regarded as one of the most desirable places to vacation and live in the world. During the past ten years the "island lifestyle" has also moved to the mainland, and the town of Bluffton, SC has also become one of the most desirable addresses in the United States.
Each of the residential communities has its own charm and personality, and offer many amenities including world championship golf, tennis, oceanfront living, beach access, health facilities, and much more.
