If your interest in purchasing area real estate is to have a property that you can rent short term when you are not using it, there are specific things that need to be considered. Here are some of those issues. Some of the plantations are completely residential and will not permit any rental terms of less than 6 months. These areas would not work for this purpose and would need to be eliminated from consideration except in rare instances. Sea Pines, Shipyard, and Palmetto Dunes are a few of the possibilities for vacation rentals. They also provide great beach access, lots of activity, and are fun for the entire family. Many people choose these areas for second homes and primary residences as well as they enjoy the permanent vacation atmosphere, excitement, and proximity to the beach. Another short term rental possibility exists within private golf communities with ownership of a golf cottage. These units can be enjoyed by an owner and rented by the plantation management to owners who have not built their homes, guests of owners, and occasionally to prospective purchasers. Please note that special tax considerations apply to these properties and the amount of personal use affects the tax shelter available to the owner. It is often the “first step” to property ownership in a resort area like Hilton Head and could be an excellent choice. |
