An Historical Perspective of the Wise House “Adams Place” This historic home has been known by several monikers across two centuries: Originally a Folk Victorian Style house, “Adams Place” was built between 1900 and 1906 by H. Q. and Martha Adams. Mr. Adams was a “Stock Farmer” and land surveyor and served as a member of the School Board of Trustees. One of the “Ridgeland” schools was located at the NE corner of the property as of 1905. The property was purchased by Alice Tuten in 1907, and it was she who installed the “Tuten” carriage stone at the front of the residence. Mrs. Tuten, her family, and her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James DeLoach, occupied the property until 1920, when it was sold to local farmer, merchant, and lumberman C. E Perry, who immediately conveyed the property to his on-in-law, John Pat Wise. John Pat Wise, born in 1888, was a native of Newberry County, graduated University of South Carolina law school and came to Ridgeland in 1912 during the formation of Jasper County from portions of Beaufort and Hampton counties. According to the cornerstone on the Jasper County courthouse, Mr. Wise was County Attorney at the time of it completion in 1915. In addition to his law practice, Mr. Wise served as Chairman of the Boar of Education, Vice President of the Bank of Ridgeland, and was active in children’s charities. He specialized in corporate law, representing many of the local plantations and hunting clubs. His office was located in the Wise Building, located in the heart of town. “Wise House” Following the purchase of the property by John Pat Wise in 1920, major renovations were initiated and the house was enlarged, bricked, and remodeled in the Classical Revival style, with a (unique to the area) widow’s walk. Although the architect’s identity is unknown, it is believed that he was based in Charleston. Upon completion, this home was among the largest homes in the town of Ridgeland. The house was insured for $15,000 in 1927. The back wing of the original house was moved to a site near the Courthouse, where it served as the first telephone office in Ridgeland, and later a residence. Mr. Wise passed away in 1935, but the house was occupied until 1983 by his widow and second wife, Margie. W. Wise, who was a remarkable woman in her own right. In the 1920’s she served as principal of Gray’s School and led the school consolidation effort, was head of the draft board during World War II, established and operated the Wise Insurance Agency, was elected president of the Jasper County Chamber of Commerce, and was very active in civic affairs in the town of Ridgeland. Owning this residence is a once in a lifetime opportunity for enjoying living history everyday. |
